Anatomy

The structure of hair can be broken down into three major parts:

The follicle - The hair follicle anchors each hair into the dermis. The Stem cells present in the follicle produce keratinocytes that form the hair while hair gets it color from melanocytes.

Root - The portion of hair below the skin surface is the hair root, which lies within follicles. The cells in the root push up to the surface until they exit the skin as soon as the follicles produce new Hair.

Shaft - Here lies the part of the hair that is outside the skin.

The hair shaft and root are made of three distinct layers of cells:

The cuticle - The cuticle is the outermost layer made of keratinocytes which are stacked on top of each other like herpes so that the outer tip of each cell points away from the body.

Cortex - The second one is cortex that lies under the cuticle and these cells form the majority of the hair’s width. Cortex are spindle-shaped and tightly packed cells which contain pigments that give the hair its color.

Medulla - It is the innermost layer of the hair and is not present in all hair.When it is present, it usually contains highly pigmented cells full of keratin but when medulla is not present then the cortex continues through the middle of the hair.
